In contrast to site-built houses, manufactured homes are factory-built, transported to the site and installed under a strict federal building code administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Strict Federal Standards
Manufactured homes are the only homes in America built following a national building code. All manufactured homes are regulated by the Federal Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards. Commonly known as the HUD Code, this code regulates manufactured housing design and construction, strength and durability, transportability, fire resistance, energy efficiency and quality. The HUD Code also sets performance standards for heating, plumbing, air conditioning, thermal and electrical systems.

Affordability
Factories maintain high-tech, assembly-line techniques and provide a controlled environment free from problems that site-built homes encounter including bad weather, theft and damage to materials stored on-site. Factories also benefit from large-scale purchasing discounts for materials. The efficiencies in the factory-built process create homes with all of the quality and amenities of a site-built house at considerably lower building and financing costs.

In San Diego County, the median home price of existing single-family homes has reached over $550,000 and local rental rates have increased dramatically in recent years. In this restrictive housing market, manufactured homes are growing in popularity as a wonderful solution for many San Diego residents to own a quality-built home in an affordable price range.

Manufactured homes represent nearly 10 percent of all homes sold in California last year.
